Speaker: Steve Henson
Steve is a member of UU Peace Fellowship in Raleigh where I have been a member since 2016. Steve plays the piano and guitar and regularly visits his parents in Sylva.
Steve grew up Southern Baptist in WV. He worked for LabCorp as a technologist for 30+ years and still have a few years to go before retirement. From 2004? to 2013 he served as music minister for a moderate Baptist church start in Wake Forest. They ran 100-125 in worship, had contemporary music with some older hymns mixed in. After every holiday season he was always exhausted and friends said I was just burnt out. But it is truly exhausting supporting ideas that you don’t fully believe. When he resigned, he assumed he had no need of ‘church’ if he didn’t believe in a god who needed that. But he quickly realized he missed being a part of a community and was happy to find UUs.
Previous Labor Day messages have focused primarily on paid labor. But what about the many people who labor without pay for a variety of reasons, such as family caregivers and volunteers?
